Academic Programs
The STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative, for students in grades K-6, aims to ignite students’ interest in STEM and encourages them to see themselves as Scientists, Technicians, Engineers and Mathematicians.
The project-based classes are held in non-traditional classroom settings and help students to explore and solve real-world challenges which they then present to an audience. The STEMulate® Change Initiative simultaneously exposes students to various STEM related industries and careers specific to each project.
Initiative Elements
- Ignites interest in STEM and encourages students to see themselves as Scientists, Technicians, Engineers, Mathematicians.
- Project-based learning curriculum helps students explore realistic cross-curricular topics and challenges within an academically and culturally diverse environment.
- Curriculum encourages students to research, conduct experiments and engineer prototypes to solve everyday problems.
- Exposes students to various STEM related industries and careers specific to each project in and around the region.
This curriculum has been vetted by Change the Equation and accepted into the STEMWorks database as a national STEM model.
Initiative Overview
The Core STEM Initiative provides over 220 hours per student of intensive, advanced STEM instruction for grades 7-12 that builds upon what our students learn in their home schools. Classes take place at John Dickinson High School in Wilmington. Students in the 11th and 12th grades live on-campus during a 4-week experience at the University of Delaware’s College of Engineering.
Initiative Elements
- A 6 week summer curriculum.
- A school year extension (Oct-May) and STEM enrichment curriculum that takes place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month.
- FIRST Robotics for middle and high school students.
- Test Awareness Workshops to familiarize students with test taking techniques and procedures.
- College Prep & College Activities Seminars for juniors and seniors led by UD College of Engineering professors and held on-campus.
- Peer Counseling & Role Models to prepare younger students for the on-campus activities at the University of Delaware.
- Job Readiness Training to ease transition from school to the work environment for senior high school students who will be entering summer employment.
- Special events such as tours of partner corporations, cultural events, social outings and more.
Summer Program
- A fast paced, intense 6 week Summer Enrichment Program for students grades 1-12. We operate Monday – Thursday from 8:00am – 3:00pm. The first half of the school day is devoted to Mathematics, Science, Computer Technology, and Communication/English skills. The second half of the day includes industrial and cultural tours along with group based engineering/STEM projects.
- 7th – 10th grade Summer Enrichment Program is modeled closely after the first 6 week summer program administered by FAME, Inc. in June 1977. The first half of the school day is devoted to Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, and Communication skills. The second half of the day focuses on industrial and cultural tours for the 7th and 8th graders, while the 9th and 10th graders are working on engineering/STEM projects. New students are accepted as rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders.
- 11th grade students are offered the opportunity to experience campus life at the University of Delaware. This 4 week program offers course work in Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Geometry, Chemistry, and Engineering.
- 12th grade students return to the University of Delaware for 4 weeks and experience two college level courses, Pre-Calculus/Calculus and Physics. In addition, students have a course in computers and an engineering research design course.
- For the School year program, classes are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, starting in October and ending in May. Participants are generally 7th-12th grade students.
