It’s hard to be it,

if you don’t ever see it.

This is the problem that the STEMulate Change® American and Global Icons Curriculum seeks to address. This book, The Many Faces of STEM, introduces our approach at FAME to making STEM education a launching pad into the future for all types of students.

Our Curricula Creates Equity

This book, The Many Faces of STEM, introduces our approach at FAME to making STEM education a launching pad into the future for all types of students. It starts with the stories behind the faces of STEM genius missing from textbooks, the faces who look like the girls and minorities who might think STEM is not for them. Then we connect these stories to STEM topics that can engage and excite students of all kinds, no matter where they come from or what they look like.

In both the STEMulate Change ® curriculum and this book, we highlight
the life stories of STEM icons who look like the students left out of the traditional STEM family picture. We focus on the obstacles these icons faced, their persistence, and the accomplishments they notched. The impact of these great STEM achievers touches everyone, and their stories can inspire students of every color, creed, and background to build successful, meaningful careers in STEM. That is our mission at FAME: to inspire career confidence in any and all students who might otherwise never believe they could create a place for themselves in STEM.

It starts with the stories behind the faces of
STEM genius missing from textbooks.

Dear Fellow Educators,

It is my honor and privilege to introduce The Many Faces of STEM educator’s guide co-developed and published by FAME Inc. and Start Engineering LLC. The purpose of the guide is to provide educators with content to help Inspire Career Confidence in all students by sharing the often-untold stories of women and other underrepresented American and Global STEM Icons.

So, if you are a certified teacher, a para-professional, an administrator, or a mom or dad seeking more inclusive curricula… The Many Faces of STEM guide is a great place to start.

Since 1976, FAME Inc. has existed to motivate and inspire girls and students of color, primarily, to achieve academically and pursue STEM-aligned careers. Along the way, our educators made it a point to share the challenges and accomplishments of women and men who represent varying ethnicities and reflect the many students we serve. In 2012, FAME Inc. more formally developed the STEMulate® Change Outreach Initiative inclusive of groundbreaking, project-based, standards-aligned, cross-curricular STEM lessons.

As the CEO of FAME Inc., I am inspired by the growing number of colleagues and thought partners who are joining us on the journey to STEMulate® Change to inspire academic and career confidence in learners. As a lifelong learner and a parent, I am encouraged by the growing number of educators who are acknowledging the significance of showing all students The Many Faces of STEM. Highlighting the tremendous STEM contributions of all people can inspire future generations to work collaboratively to keep our planet habitable, usable, enjoyable, and generally good.

I am asking you to support equity in education and the transformation of our global story-telling to include the hidden faces of STEM. Transformation takes a village and for those of you who are less familiar with FAME Inc., I invite you to learn how for nearly 44 years our institution has motivated students and families to embrace math, science, and soft skills development to inspire strong leaders.

This book features seven of the 20-plus STEMulate Change® icons.

Each icon’s part of the book has three sections: Excite, Engage, and Empower.
We developed the content in all areas with diverse learners in mind.

STEP 1

EXCITE

learners get to know icons as full human beings. A colorful illustration and personal quotation give a face and voice to the biographical sketch that follows, tracing the icon’s journey through ups, downs, twists, and turns to ultimate STEM triumphs.

STEP 2

ENGAGE

Invites students to project themselves into an icon’s “mindspace” and imagine what they might do stepping into real-world STEM action. Discussion prompts encourage students to think purposefully about the icon’s path towards achievement and to connect relevant details to their own lived experiences.

STEP 3

EMPOWER

Step-by-step instructions for hands-on exercises that give learners concrete experiences with the topics explored in the first two sections. These lessons are simplified excerpts of what is in the STEMulate Change curriculum.
